Finding email data can be a challenge! The two most common programs I usually deal with are Outlook and Outlook Express. Sometimes there is a Personal Address Book or Windows Address Book that also must be located for back-up.
Beware! These locations can be changed!
Outlook data is usually contained in a .pst file. It is usually in the following locations:
WinXP/2K: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst
Win9x: C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst
Outlook Express data is usually contained in a series of .dbx files. They are usually in the following locations:
WinXP/2K: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{some-big-long-stupid-ambiguous-number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Win9x: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{some-big-long-stupid-ambiguous-number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
The Windows Address Book is in a .wab file. It is usually in the following locations:
WinXP/2K: C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\username.wab
Win9x: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\username.wab
The Personal Address Book is in a .pab file. It has been so long since I dealt with them, though, I can't remember where they are. My personal systems do not use them. When I encounter them again, I'll update this page. Until then, just remember to search on ".pab" and back-up wherever you find it.
